I stole (or should I say, “borrowed with permission”) this phrase (from author and economic developer, Kim Huston), who wrote the book, “Small Town Sexy: the allure of living in small town America.”
I recently heard Ms. Huston speak at a “State of the Community” address in downtown LaGrange, Kentucky. As a board member with Discover Downtown LaGrange, I share Kim’s fervent passion for Small Town America.
Small Towns Are Making A Huge Comeback
It was a riveting talk, and it resonated with me in so many ways. She talked about how small towns across America are not only surviving, but thriving. Why? Well, there are many reasons, and I will cite a few here:
City Folks Tired Of The Fast Pace of City Life
I have worked with thousands of buyers over the years who get transferred to the Louisville area, and then find out about the small-town atmosphere Oldham County offers. As they tour with me, I always take them to downtown LaGrange. I tell them about how nice it is to walk down the sidewalk and chat with folks I’ve come to know. I can shop anywhere, but I prefer to come downtown to shop whenever I can because of the way it makes me feel. I can have a stressful day, drive the short distance to downtown LaGrange, and my shoulders immediately start to relax!
“Boomerangers” Are Coming Back
We teach our children to do well in school and then we send them off to conquer the world. They get a great education through Oldham County’s Award-Winning school system, then fly away and don’t come back. Well, that trend is changing. They remember the hometown of their youth, and want their kids to be taught by their favorite teacher. They want them to play on the baseball fields they played on. In short, they want them to experience the kind of Americana they enjoyed.
Many Young People Are Deciding To Stay
Our Oldham County kids are well prepared to go off to college and get degrees they can use right here in Oldham County, or work in nearby Louisville. They are already sold on the quality of life here. And why not? If they like the night life, Louisville is as exciting a city you’ll find anywhere. And Louisville arts are also on par with every major city, too. Louisville’s park system is one of the best in the nation. The Louisville Zoo is a great place to take the family. In other words, our youth gets it. Staying in their own hometown of Oldham County and having all Louisville amenities close gives them the best of both worlds.
Oldham County Is A Great Place To Retire
Just as Ms. Huston described as a growing trend across America, retirees are coming to Oldham County for its relaxed, laid back quality of life. I have helped hundreds of empty-nesters and retirees who have found Oldham County online and just decided to pack their bags and move here because it is, as Oldham County’s slogan describes it: “Quetly Amazing”.
I applaud Ms. Huston for writing this book. You can hear her enthusiasm for life in Small Town America on every page. It sure speaks to the way my husband and I feel about living in a town where you really get to know people. You feel a true sense of community. Our children’s teachers care deeply about their students, who are also their neighbors. Oh, I could go on and on, but suffice it to say Oldham County is a great place to live!
